Arsenitch

The whole of Russia knew the name «Arsenitch» at the close of XIX century.

This name had been acknowledged in Europe, America, Asia.

He was called as «King of Russian Vodka» inter vivos. He was held in fame, respect and rewarded with the highest orders of Russian Empire such as Saint Anna, Saint Stanislas and Saint Vladimir. He was one of the most reach men in Russia, had the highest commercial status — Supplier of Court His Imperial Majesty. He became Hereditary honorary citizen and commerceís Councillor.

He possessed the mansion in Moscow, at the prestigious Pyatnitckaja street in the centre of city, near Moscow river, he owned the motor-car of model «Mercedes-Benz», which was perhaps the first in Russia. His fortune was valued of 17 millions of roubles, he paid up to 5 millions to Russian Treasury, i.e. more, than anyone of his numerous business rivals.

But he was unassuming man in his life. He practiced understandable and simple motto: «Honour is more expensive than benefit», patriarchal views on morality, family and belief. He didnít welcomed any of innovations, lived according to the rules, apprehended from father and grandfather, prayed in church, kept the fast and made the donations of huge money for temples and for poor men.

He considered his large family as the main wealth. He had five sons and seven daughters. Arsenich was a former serf in Jaroslavl province, became his life as waiter in Moscow tavern and, some time, long ago this name didnít excite neither emotions nor respect. Years would be passed and name «Arsenitch» will become the common noun as if «ampere», «curie» or «watt». Worldwide glory will come to former serf from Kajurovo country, belonging to parish church of Potapovo village in Mishkinsky district, located in Jaroslavl government, and who was the son of Arseny Aleksejevich and Matrena Grigorjevna, and born on 9-th of January, 1831 by Old Style.

So, then people would rush to collect the «crumbs» everything related to this person, for pursuit the answer: how and why this ordinary peasant, illiterate, unencumbered with knowledge of economics and management laws, as well as PR and advertising, became, all of a sudden, even not the first inter pares in production of vodka in Russia and in world at large, but really the main, and any else would not be seen behind him? The real «King of Russian Vodka».

And, as if the fate decided to choose him for any unclear and inexplicable mission at the close of XIX century, making him, Arsenitch, as personification of Russian national drink-vodka. So as to, after many-many years, people, beginning to speak about traditional Russian drink, would speak about Arsenitch as about the main expert, producer, keeper of centuries-old traditions.

So, there is occurred like this: to date world associated the word «vodka» with his, Arsenitch, name. The task had been determined and carried out.

Grand scale of Arsenitchís business

Where is the secret of Arsenitchís success? One of such secrets — the best raw materials for drinks. Juniper for «Juniper vodka» was delivered from North, sage, origanum, thyme were gathered near Moscow, and cranberries were arrived from Valday, rowanberries — from Susdal. Arsenitch didnít dissemble anything and didnít make idle promises.

The bill of fare of production, made by Arsenitch, amazes by wide variety — «Table wine № 21», vodka «Imperial», champagne «Close of the century», «Maraskino», «Cherry vodka», «Fine-Champagne», «Nezhinskaja rowanberry», liqueur «White plum», adorable by empress Alexandre Theodorovna. Such production as «Zubrovka», «Travnichek/ drink from grasses», «Sukharnichek/from crackers», «Limonnichek/from lemons», «English bitter», «Malorossijskaja zapekanka», «Spotikach (from stewed cherries)», «Nastoyka from fresh sweet cherries» («nastoyka of well-known quality»), «Listovka», «Mamura» (liqueur from berries of northern Russia), «Jerofeich» (from 20 grasses) had been created in the certain time.

There were more than four hundred names of drinks of all kinds!

At the same time Arsenitch was famed for such vodka: Hunting, Fruit, Chinese, Maritime, Forestry, Persian, French, Volzhskaja, German, Siberian (in ware with form of black and white bears), Afghan bitter taste, Northern (in ware with form of crucian), Kamskaja, English bitter, Cinchona, Wild orange essence.

He bought up Russian wine in Bessarabia, in Crimea, in region of Don and at Caucasia for trade and aged it in cellars during many years in huge tuns with the temperature 16 degrees. There was ability to store up to 600 thousand buckets of first-class wine of every sort and kind, what were equal 9 millions and 600 thousand litres in converting into present-day measurements.

The production and sale of wine and Cahors wine for cloisters and temples in Russia were highly remunerative business, and the label with Arsenitchís name guaranteed the quality of it. Although, it may be said, that falsification made by dishonest business rivals, could be met there. By reason of it Arsenitch spent huge money for articles in newspapers, disclosing tricks of those people, who endeavoured to become rich by the way of producing the drinks under his name. As he said, «They want to ride into paradise on another hunch».

Arsenitch had an ideal tutor — his uncle and father, who was a peasant, ransomed themselves from landowner and became free long before 1861 year, when Emperor Alexander II Liberator granted the freedom for Russian bondslaves. Millions peasant families, the representatives of class, mostly enslaved and deprived of civil rights, who had no passports, but was the largest in number in the empire, leaving their villages for towns, was busied themselves with the job in industry and trade. Powerful impetus to development for Russia in whole would be given under such circumstance. The countrymen of Arsenitch also were among them.

A year before his uncle and father registered their establishment for wine trade — so called «renskovij» wine cellar (incorrect name of «Rhine wine»). Arsenitch served for father as salesman, but a few months later he will buy one more «renskovijí wine cellar and will become as merchant of the third guild in Moscow and owner of two wine stories. But the trade was not the main matter for young merchant. His fatherís words about vodka of the bad quality strongly remembered by him: «It is time to make our own vodka, the genuine one!»

Only three years would be passed till the moment, when Arsenitch carried out the wish of his father. He will give the start for own winery with 9 workmen. All production, made at his enterprise, could be contained into a few tuns. But it was only beginning. As would be written by pressmen at these times: «…Thanks to tireless labour of firmís founder, his conscientious attitude to business as well as attention to consumers interests, his work became so developed in the shortest period, that the opportunity to arrange the own winery for production of all kinds of vodka, nalivka, liqueurs was appeared». The quantity of workmen and employees was already 25 persons. But there was very important thing-he started to produce vodka of the outstanding good quality!

His «Crystal № 21» was the most popular drink in Russia. Not because it was inexpensive — 40 kopecks for bottle. The cost of «Table wine, wheaten, № 40» was considerably more — already one rouble for bottle, but it also had been found a good market. And although it was famous for irreproachable purification, taste of it conceded a little to the common favourite «№ 21». But here was the Arsenitchís secret — to make all vodka with only high quality, as the first as the third sort and at reasonable price, as for consumer of modest means and even as for minister of Court.

Arsenitch paid up duties and excises for Russian Treasure house in amount of 5 000 000 roubles annually. He was the greatest taxpayer among producers and traders of spirits.

In 70- years of XIX century he gives the job for thousand of people. One and half thousand of workmen were engaged on his winery. Four Moscow printing-plants, including well-known and leading, as Association for engine-press of Levenson in Moscow, who delivered up to 60 millions labels per year for Arsenitchís production. Advertising posters for enterprise with pictures of Arsenitchís drinks and four State emblems, which Russian Imperial Court awarded to him for bright triumph on Trade-Industrial exhibitions in 1877, 1882, 1886 and 1896 years, were also printed there. The mark of Supplier for Court of His Imperial Majesty Car Emperor All-Russian, emblems of Sweden Kingís and Norway Kingís Oscar II Courts, for prince Gustav and Spain Kingís Court, for His Imperial Highness Moscow governor-general, Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Theodorovna were placed on labels and posters.

The ware of unthinkable variety, such as phials, «shtofs», decanters, bottles of all sizes and shapes had been created for Arsenitchís production on seven glass-works, belonging to brothers Kostereff, Komissaroff, Malcoff, located in provinces of Vladimir, Bryansk and Tver. There were almost 50 millions of wareís units annually!

But cork, tarring, sealing wax were also necessary. The firm spent almost 120 thousand roubles only for corks. There was not simple matter- to keep the qualitative cork at stories. Hardly the attention become loosen, moisture was «look through», «greedy» fungus would stick into cork and millions of bottles could be poured out in garbage can, when poor, «sick» cork was brought the dredge of mustiness in bottle!

Huge transportation management was belonging to Arsenitch — up to 200 carts delivered orders over all Moscow daily. First-rate stories in Paris, advertising their turnovers, reported the following: unprecedented amount of carts are ordered daily! Most of all in the world! But, how much it was? Merely 40–50… Arsenitch rented 16 stories for his production only in Moscow, he also had the stories in Nizhni Novgorod, in Saint-Petersburg, at corner of Gorohovaja street and Small Marine/Malaja Morskaja street, in Baku, the store house and the shop in Perovsk, in Daghestan, on the South of Russia, in Warsaw. He also opened two shops for own production in Shanghai and in Harbin. Arsenitch arranged there huge stocks for his production before revolution. Russian emigrants drank his vodka in 20-th and even in 30-th years.

Representative offices of Arsenitchís firm were located in London, Paris, New York, Prague, Berlin.

So such was the business of former serf Arsenitch, who became «The king of Russian vodka».

Paris and «Nezhinskaja rowanberry»

Word-wide exhibition was opened in Paris in 1889 with the «big pomp». The exhibition was devoted to centenary of French revolution. The world observed the famous wonder, created by constructor Gustav Eiffel — iron tower, which Emil Zola right away called as «iron monster».

Russian manufacturers arrived in Paris «not with empty hands», they were able to amaze the French: Shustovs brought the bottle with shape of tower of Eiffel, and firm of Beckmann — bottle in the shape of Vandom column.

And only Arsenitch, as if with a jeer, gambled on not on form, but on content and introduced to high committee of experts the new drink, the drink, which later became the most famous in the family of his vodka — «Nezhinskaja rowanberry». So, this product «conquered» Paris and became the sensation of exhibition and general favourite.

French newspapers wrote about it, as about Russian miracle and experts were astonished at unheard-of and refined fragrance and taste. Besides members of jury were charmed by bottle of unusual shape: it was cone, elongated as swan-neck, with basis, looked like small «pleated skirt».

«Nezhjnskaja» proved to be so good, that it had got even for covers for fashion magazines. It was real pleasure to drink it, and enjoyment — to contemplate. Arsenitch himself thought out the shape of this bottle. He was able and liked to design. Almost all of famous decanters and «shtofs» were born in his office before.

However the content of bottle was also thought out by Arsenitch in person.

There was the following matter: «Nezhinskaja rowanberry» had to be named as «Nevezhinskaja», since the berries, which were used for extraction, grew in Nevezhino village in province of Vladimir, near from Suzdal. There grew particular, sweet rowanberries, in whole word no any taste like it. These berries had different tints — from red, violet to yellow. It had also unusual taste. But it must be found. And here is like proverb — «The way should be overpowered by going man».

Arsenitch and his specialists were constantly in findings of qualitative, natural raw materials for vodka and nastoyka. Arsenitch knew many things about grasses and berries from childhood, because distillers and sorcerers from Yaroslavl used it for vodka and medical tinctures since olden times. But, having appropriate knowledge, Arsenitch invited the specialists, including the scientists from Moscow University. Colleagues of Arsenitch travelled over Russia to find the raw materials for special kinds of nastoyka, nalivka and vodka. They travelled at North and acknowledged that juniper cones have inexpressible fragrance. They knew, where grows the most fragrant mint in Moscow region, where is «the right» lemon-balm, where is anise and coriander. Cranberries of the best quality and taste were found in Novgorod province.

So, once during findings of original berry for «raw materials» with unusual taste, the colleagues of Arsenitch arrived in village Nevezhino in Vladimir province. It was happened in autumn of 1888. At that time Arsenitch returned from Spain, where regular gold medal was awarded him in Barcelona for grapes wines and vodka and he became as cavalier of Saint Isabelís order, granted him personally by king of Spain for outstanding contribution into industry.

Rowanberries were grown wonderfully in Nevezhin just at this year. Native peasant earned not bad money, when gathered for Moscow Merchant about half-ton of rowanberry bunches. Brunches had been frozen, after that it been put in production. Excellent vodka had been made, the box of which Pjotr Arsenjevich delivered to king of Spain and received the highest judgements for «Nevezhinskaja».

But Arsenitch considered at that time, that if he was able to create unusual nastoyka, other persons would also be able to produce the similar, even more so, it will not be large difficulty to discover Nevezhino village by the name. Therefore he ordered to change the name of product, to make over the former ready label for «Nezhinskaja rowanberry», giving the explanation: «In order, that rivals couldnít have their eyes on it».

And actually, such name lost the way in rivals searching for many years. Many of them, observing the success of «Nezhinskaja», got roused and started the production of nastoyka from rowanberries, to prepare the rowanberries with cognac. They knew no rest neither from the glory of Arsenitch, nor his new «produce», as he styled his drinks himself. But such rowanberry nastoyka, like «Nezhinskaja», made by another manufacturer, didnít resulted. Rowanberries are usually has a bitter taste, but, made by Arsenitch, was sweet. Perhaps, sugar is added? Or any syrups? Where is the secret? Perhaps, rowanberries are peculiar? They directed power forces for gathering of ashberries under town Nezhin, but it was mistake — it had been gathered at another region and another rowanberries must been gathered. Town Nezhin was famed for cucumbers, but not for rowanberries. They only wasted their money, when candied the spirit from Nezhinís rowanberries. Arsenitch foreseen everything and purposely complicated the rivals by the name of drink.

Exhibition in Paris closed with the event of awarding the large gold medal for «Nezhinskaja rowanberries». There was full success of rowanberries nastoyka as in Moscow as in the whole of Russia. It became popular so much in a moment, that winery even hadnít sufficient time to produce it.

Thus enterprise of Arsenitch confirmed once again, that their motto: «To give the best, to create products from first-class materials and not to feel sorry about means and costs for perfected production apparatus» was not «mere word».

Arsenitch and Emperor

From remembrances of Arsenitchís son — Vladimir Petrovich, who found himself in White Guard after Russian revolution of 1917 year, then abroad, in Turkish Constantinople, where he lived as an emigrant.

…Our pavilion at exhibition was not great, but at good place, built in Russian-Byzantine style — remembered Arsenitchís son Vladimir Petrovich about his father, who lived in Paris — pavilion didnít amazed by effect, but differed with quality of our first-class exhibits. Public, visited us, was serious, businesslike and made orders for high amounts.

Suddenly — hearing was spreaded: Czar Emperor Alexander III would deign to visit our pavilion with his retinue. What was began here! Some people started running, another got dressed up, the third- came to standstill in horror. Father looked over my attire, stroked on head.

«If Czar would ask about anything, answer firmly and loudly,as grown-up! Do You understand, sonny?».

«Yes, I do, father», — I answered, although I felt, that my legs «gave way» from fear. I will see Czar just now!

Singing «Oh, God, save Czar!» was resounded, «Long Years» was heard, and I saw, that Czar, looking straight at me, walked over hall to our showcase, escorted by huge, bright retinue, including generals and civil officials. My heart began to beat and, it was seemed, that will escape from breast. If it was happened without father, who was standing behind me and was holding my shoulders, I should run off anywhere into the dark corner!

Or could to faint away!

«…Your Majesty, dear father, do the honour, please, taste the vodka of my Smirnoffís production» — I heard the voice of my father through noise.

Czar towered opposite me with but a step, as if came down from his portrait, smiling from height of his huge growth:

«Whether it would be very strong?».

«Just right, thatís it, Your Majesty!».

Father brought to Czar crystal cup on gold tray. His Majesty took away glove from hand and crossed.

«Well, letís try!».

He was drinking as rustic man, without stopping, dashingly twisted moustache, as if listening to himself.

«The best there is! My compliments, Pjotr Arsenjevich!», — said Czar, shaking fatherís hand.

«So, but who is there?- Czar saw me, hiding behind fatherís back, and asked: — It seems, Your sonny, Pjotr Arsenjevich?».

«Yes, Your Majesty, itís my heir, Vladimir!».

Father took me by shoulders and slightly pushed forward. Good heavens, what I felt at that moment! To this very day I remember that feeling of joy, fear, astonishment, pride and, the main thing, arch and tender glance of the beautiful, large eyes and his squint! He patted on my head:

«Be proud of father, Vladimir Petrovich, the great deed he does!»

«Yes, Your Majesty!» — I babbled, hiding my eyes.

«But how old are You?» — he asked and all Fatherís instructions went right out of my mind.

I was standing on wadding legs and tried to think over, how old was I!

«He is eleven, Your Majesty!».

«Well, Vladimir Petrovich, what business would You choose in future? Just answer yourself, without fatherís tips!».

I wished to choose a lot of business in childhood: first of all — to be cabman, then- to be astronomer, sometimes- even to be constable. Really, most of all I liked to ride on my pony. But I remembered fatherís precept to answer as"grown-up» and I answered loudly and neatly:

«I should like to become as my Father, Your Majesty!».

«But who is Your father?».

«He is hereditary citizen, Your Majesty!».

Everybody, standing around, loudly bursted out laughing, Czar laughed firstly until tears.

«You just said so! „Hereditary citizen“, not otherwise! I will remember it!».

He patted on my cheek and I remember until this time what pleasant odour had his perfumed glove.

When he came out, Czar said to father: «Your son will be a far-reaching man! Remember my words, please!»

He heartily wished the further prosperity for fatherís enterprise.

«There is a fine fellow, indeed!, — father embraced me — How You came to mind to say such thing to His Majesty!».

When father returned in Moscow, he said to everyone about me dialog with Czar. But I knew afterwards, that exhibition justified all expenses and brought almost annual profit and — the main thing — orders of Court.

After Imperialís visit father Pjotr Arsenjevich was granted significant «bonus» for every of employees, who was at exhibition in Nizhni Novgorod.

Arsenitch in the army and in the navy

The third part of Russian army in pre-revolutionary Russia had been kept, provided and equipped on money, paid up by Arsenitch to State by way of duties and excises. And vodka, produced by Arsenitch, was well-known and estimated in the army and in the navy. It was desired guest in officerís mess-rooms, ward-rooms in warships, at regimental holidays and during traditional feasts, devoted to graduation of young officers from military school.

There are some evidences of eyewitness at these years:

«…Door in long light mess-room was opened. The longest, gala — covered table was striking. The room was full of officers. They became to „pump fill“ us, „newly-made“, at a moment- it was accepted in such day and we obediently overturned wine-glasses again and again. Behind my chair, as behind every „newly-made“, was orderly with bottle, as if he rooted to the floor, so my goblet was constantly full. At a sudden all jumped up from chairs and instantly there became silent.

— Trubetckoy arrived, commander of regiment, — whispered to me, — „present“, but donít lose swank!

Making the incredible effort, collecting in lump all my will, I came straightly to him, trying to „type“ steps as in front-line. I was able to stop timely and report to general all was necessary. General gave hand to me with good-natured smile and congratulated. Any voice said near:

— Well, he, at least, drinks not badly.

— I very glad to hear it! — answer general with smile. — I appreciate, when anybody knows, how to drink!».

Day of promotion of officers was accompanied with the most serious feasts at all military school of Russia without exception.

The capital especially succeeded in it. In Saint-Petersburg the promotion of officers always arranged solemnly and ceremonial glass of vodka was indispensable participator for «dedication».

There were also childlike traditions — to bury bottle with Arsenitchís vodka in forest and go to find it. Anybody who found the bottle with white tarring, had to cry: «I found cep!», and to cry «I found orange-cap boletus», if the bottle with red tarring had been found.

«Gathered» bottle was drunk out by all command.

But there were also serious traditions, for example, dedication in officers, which was held in Krasnoje Selo with the presence of all czarís family, headed by Czar. As a rule, Czar arrived on parade of graduates in uniform of such branch of arm, to which «dedicated» officers been related — in Kingís coat of hussar, uhlan or dragoon officer. If reefers were dedicated in officers, as a rule, on warships, Czar could be in uniform of naval officer.

But — first of all -there were army camps. «…Everything had been changed for us in few days by reason of dust at Military field in Krasnoje Selo,- it had been written in memoirs of lieutenant-general A. A. Ignatjev- We received uniform caps with peak, officerís sword-knots for sabres, and being military-cadets, i.e. semi-officers, had been sent at our future regiments… After completion of large manoeuvres and common parade all pages and cadets were called to Czarís barrage, where Czar pronounced words, opening for us the whole world: „Congratulate yours as officers!“.

This minute, for which we prepared during long years, caused real explosion of gladness, expressed in powerful „hurrah!“.

I parted with czarina with excitement, receiving from her hands the order about dedication, about promotion to cavalry regiment, which was began from my family name.

I returned by gallop in Pavlovsk outskirts at disposal of our regiment with the order under epaulet, Already in a few minutes, coming out from my log hut, uniformed in snow-white officerís tunic, I embraced old re-engaged trumpeter Zhitkoff, he was the first, who saluted me, as by command „attention“…».

It is clear, even from this short fragment, what emotional enthusiasm was caused new epaulets for former cadets. Whether itís necessary to say, that restaurants hadnít close until every morning at the days of dedication in officers?

In tsarist Russia such events were happened, which could be competitive in careless, light-headed merriment — there was days of dedication in officers and ancient university Holiday of enlightenment «Day of Saint Tatyana».

If military men received additional glass of vodka at the day of coronation of Russian emperors and empresses, at Eastertide, Christmas, at the birthdays of eminent persons, then lavish drinking-bouts during regimental holidays were as usual thing.

«… The feasts for soldiers at officers of squadron expenses were arranged in squadron holidays. After prayer and proclamation of «longevity» the feast arranged in squadron mess-room, was started. Tables for soldiers were covered with clean table-clothes and full of various snacks. Buckets with vodka were standing on especial table in the corner. The table for officers were set in the next room. The feast was opened by general, when soldiers took their places.

He approached to the table with vodka, where sergeant poured out the cup for him, spooning out vodka from bucked with ladle.

«Well, boys, congratulate you with your holiday and from the heart Iím drinking to the dregs for your health!» — general proclaimed it by brave baritone and, widely crossing himself, dashingly knocked back the cup.

«We humbly thank you, your Excellency! « — answered soldiers gravely. The same procedure was fulfilled by all officers after general, one after another, beginning from elder and ending with junior.

After that the official part was over, all sat down and then each of them began to eat and to drink with the greatest pleasure, without ceremony…»

But some days drinking was forbidden. By memoirs of general of White Guard Anthony Ivanovich Denikin, daily «menu» for soldiers in the end of XIX — in beginning of ’’ centuries «…was noted by unusual modesty: morning — tea with brown bread (it was in order 3 pounds of bread daily); for dinner — red-beet soup- borsch or usual soup with ½ pound of meat or fish (after 1905 year- ¾ of pound) and porridge; for supper — gruel, dressed with lard. The food was entirely satisfactory by amount of calories and by taste, and, in any case, more nutritious, than the peasantry had at home…

„Sample“ of soldiers food was traditional rite, which was executed by the most eminent commander, not excepting Czar, during his visits of quarters at time of dinner or supper…».

Here are pre-revolutionary photography: Nicholas Aleksandrovich Romanoff together with heir are taking the sample of naval dinner — young Alexis, standing on tiptoe near of huge cauldron, blows on the spoon with soldierís porridge.

Nicholas Romanoff raises the cup in round of officers on Hodinsky field. There is the photography of Nicholas Aleksandrovich Romanoff in soldierís uniform of Preobrazhensky regiment. He stands by order «attention», his roll from overcoat is across shoulder, there is rifle, and czarevitch Alexis on his hands. Picture had amusing history, slightly having a likeness with anecdote.

This case was happened allegedly in the South — in Sochi or in Yalta. Czar, rather was drinking and walked along boulevards, dressed up in soldierís uniform. Evidently he expected, that no one would recognize him in such garment. «Wobbly» soldier couldnít to provoke suspicion and, when Nicholas Aleksandrovich was recognized, the large scandal was threatened.

Nobody else, as P. A. Stolypin, supposedly stated: «For shame! Itís necessary to save this comedian promptly!» It was doubtful vocabulary for prime minister, but, undoubtedly, — next morning Nicholas Aleksandrovich made the real march-spurt at the distance of ten versts along summer army camps.

How Arsenitch advertised his own vodka

From remembrances of Arsenitchís son — Vladimir Petrovich, who found himself in White Guard after Russian revolution of 1917 year, then abroad, in Turkish Constantinople, where he lived as an emigrant.

I was always amazed, how Pjotr Arsenjevich «held in his head» not only all names of our production, but remembered the quantity of wares, had been sold. Moreover, father personally took the part in creation of great deal of paint labels, which were placed in catalogue, been sent for me.

It is astonishing, how he was able to take under his vigilant control everything! And feeling didnít let down him, you see, we hadnít any failed items in range of production.

He newer used alcohol, but for all that he distinguished the taste of his drinks among any other. For example, when he compared our vodka with product of Michael Popov, well-known factory owner, manufacture of whose was disposed on Moscow, along Moscow river, near Kremlin and Christ the Saviour Temple, he could say, what the distinction between each other, what kind of spirit had been bought by rival, whether the purification was done properly, what water had been used, what place it been delivered from.

But how he was able to narrate about his drinks!

I often accompanied him on trade fair in Nizhni Novgorod and heard his stories about our vodka said for customer, hurried up to our shop windows — to stare, to taste, to make the order.

«Well, what kind of vodka You have?» — the guest at exhibition could ask.

«Itís — „Hunting“ vodka!».

«Well — „Hunting“! What the mark is it? Probably, itís made for hunters?».

There father would attest his article even so, that they asked him «Itís possible to taste this one, for hunters?».

«Oh! Not for hunters, but — „Hunting!“».

«What itís in appearance?».

«Itís quite delicious vodka! Generous bitter taste of it favours appetite! It allowed for brain to be clear, but for Russian courage — to be risen. Hunter is the most brave from living creatures, he always takes the risk, he is always face to face with wild nature!».

«Ah! Oh! But what is vodka „Jerofeich“? What is a person?».

Father told about «Jerofeich " the following:

«Dear Sir, listen please short verse first of all:
One big fellow drank «Jerofeich»
He was crying and screamed:
If anybody could call me
as «Ivan Mosejevich!».

Father told the verse and asked: «Who wrote this? Aha! Donít you know? Poet Nekrasoff!».

«Where is the relation between Nekrasoff and vodka?».

If father noticed an interest in eyes of anybody, he will tell about «Jerofeich» in such a way, that there would mouth waters! Our «Jerofeich» is strong, and its recipe is consists of scores of grasses, including motherwort, bitter wormwood, thyme.

To have glass of «Jerofeich» with pickle is better of all, and its influence on untrained mind-is not comparable with anything!

Anyone would wish to unburden his heart to casual counter and to receive from him the deliverance from all faults.

«But I like chartreuse!» — could say any obstinate merchant in the boots like bottles, acting for public or for his merchantís «half», dressed in attire from Paris at cost of many thousand, and looking like New Yearís tree.

-Your vodka is nothing to what I saw and tasted in Karlovy Vary!

«As You please! — answered father, — sorry, but it is disgustful for me, because it is produced improperly and strength of it is lowered. Forty degrees — whatís correctly, and Demetrius Ivanovich Mendelejeff would confirm it, dear sir!».

«Well, Your Mendeleyeff doesnít mean anything for me!» — visitor says obstinately.

«The French prefer 20 degrees, but our country is cold, we have other organisms. Their Benedictines are too weak- itís only harmful!».

«Well, I had drank Benedictine, so what?».

«Did You like it?».

«Oh, no! Itís vermin!».

«Thatís that! Itís vermin, because the degree is too low!».

But Russian vodka, said father, any Benedictine will put to shame. Because it has a remarkable nature. It promotes harmonization between the people. It set free in human being only the best, but the worse- closes under lock. Vodka discovers the best properties of Russian soul, if it would be used reasonably: good-fellowships, faithfulness, kindness.

Spite gets spilled only from unclean, counterfeit product.

Then devil gets spilled in man and this devil draws him into temptation, dirt and lust.

But after pure «Smirnovskaja» wouldnít be even light chafe!

«Well, You persuaded me, eloquent! — will answer the merchant in the accompaniment of laughter. — Pour out me for five kopeks coin!».

And will knock back his glass. Father had a good laugh at him.

«Who is drinking in such manner? Vodka has a special taste not for everyone. Itís desirable to roll it within mouse, as silver jingle!».

The purity of Russian soil is contained here. Sour schnapps with fusel oil, as well as whisky havenít similar taste. Whether product, made with love, couldnít to evoke reciprocal love inside you?

So, my father was a real poet!

Besides, we took marvellous snacks foe exhibition — small mushrooms, caviar, herring.

Any person would taste of our vodka, take some snack and declares:

«You are really — serpent-tempted,Mr. Manufacturer! No any Benedictine no more! And Iíll give an advice to everyone. How did You tell the verse about „Jerofeich?“ Mary, remember, please, I will tell it for my own!….»

The bears of Arsenitch

From remembrances of Arsenitchís son — Vladimir Petrovich, who found himself in White Guard after Russian revolution of 1917 year, then abroad, in Turkish Constantinople, where he lived as an emigrant.

Shapes of wares, used by Arsenitch, had highly unusual, intricate at times. Russian bitter nastoyka «Siberian», for example, was sold in vessels with shape of black and white bears, ware for «Northern» was named «Crucian», it really looked like crusian, cognacs, liqueurs were sold in decanters and jugs with various forms, balsams — in earthen jugs.

Arsenitch also used other bottles — with narrowed bottom or top, with oblong or short-cut neck, lean in a pointed, or, quite the contrary, with pleasant plenitude.

But else to wind round the bottle with straw ribbon — oh, itís thing!

Or it was possibly to cover the bottle with sputtering of different colors- please yourself, why not to try? Glass itself is made, colored as golden-amber, chlorine or deep-green, black- at your desire, with the help of various additions.

The bottles for Arsenitch production were delivered from Riga, also it made at glass-works in provinces of Tverj and Vladimir, belonging to brothers Kostereff, Vladimir Komissaroff, crystal manufacture of Malcoff, it were delivered also from factories of Kruzhenkoff and Bahmetjeff. Annual requirement of wares was total 50 millions units with different capacities and configurations.

Itís understood, that other manufacturers, such as Beckmann, Shriter also used good looking ware. Each of them aspired to differ from other producers. Shustov, who was the main competitor of Arsenitch, also poured out vodka in vessels in the form of bears, in any case his bears was differed from our. Their front forelegs had been stretched along trunk, but bear of Arsenitch held it crossed on chest. You see, the animal seemed more powerful in such pose, and this also played a part, when there was a question about choiŮe near shop shelf- the sole of purchaser is not cleared indeed!

Arsenitchís firm also used live bears for advertising of their production. But really that was later, after his death. Sons of Arsenitch — Peter, Nicholas and Vladimir after foundation of Trade firm, decided to make the advertising of their vodka more «up to date» and democratic, to go off their fatherís traditions, contrary to his will. Something was resulted. In any case, there was written a lot of about history with bears on stand with their products in various periodicals.

For the first time such action was arranged at one of trade fairs in Nizhni Novgorod at the beginning of ’’ century. Brothers made everything in their power in order that their section was on of the most striking. Warehouses with firmís produce were placed almost along the whole of street. The main pavilion was grandiose, luxuriously decorated in style of Russian native art. Central «attraction», thanks to the crowd of gapers gathered near stand, was constructed stage, where the bears walked by hind legs and danced. He was trained to bow down to the ground and even brought to public drinks and clinked glasses with those who wishes.

«Please go ahead, have a drinks, a snacks as much as you want!», — There was cordial motto of pavilion. Unheard-of performance and gratuitous food invited incredible number of public.

Dense crowd was standing there, so it was difficult to pass through it.

All wished to clink glasses with bears, it was made expressly loudly — so a great deal of glasses was broken. Only after there became clear, that these bears were not real, but mechanical stuffed animals, made amazingly and greatly expensive. Sometimes persons, specially engaged, were dressed in bearís skin.

That was put on a mask by grease-paint and lighting effects. Only two or three bears were really living. Assistants held them by chain and didnít go away. These representatives of bearís race were given to drink until condition, when they couldnít to stay, first of all they went down on four legs, then — sat down, after all they fell asleep. So, bears are great lovers of vodka — they willingly swilled vodka, clutching bottle by forelegs.

How Arsenitch started his business

From remembrances of Arsenitchís son — Vladimir Petrovich, who found himself in White Guard after Russian revolution of 1917 year, then abroad, in Turkish Constantinople, where he lived as an emigrant.

There were always a great number of the most intricate legends around the story about creation by Arsenitch of his empire of vodka. One of them said, that his business of many millions Arsenitch began thanks to any occasion. Working as bottle-washer in wine shop of his uncle Ivan, he once served somewhat eccentric, but very rich young lady with doggy and in tremendous expensive bonnet. This young lady was capricious, she ordered one article, then another, after that cancelled the order, and returned for it again. Arsenitch, being restrained man, didnít disclose the discontent, he was quick and obliging, in spite of all whims of customer.

Evidently, she took the fancy of it. Otherwise, how could be explained the fact, that she presented him lottery-ticket. The ticket was fortunate and brought to Arsenitch 100 thousand rubles — it was enormous money at this time. And, supposedly, young salesman put up money in any profitable business with quick mind, and became rich in result. Itís probably, but hardly the ordinary luck could help Arsenitch to become «King of Russian vodka», to win all of rivals and even to be the Supplier of czarís Court. Others qualities were required for it- such as business like character, nous, mind, providence. And-evidently- peasantís trait — cunning was also presented.

One of legends, which answer on question: in what way Arsenitch was able to make his drinks recognized during short period, to become the person, well-known in Russia, had been related to Moscow university and to students, who were been sent for sale his vodka.

Once Arsenitch founded himself in celebration of students holiday- «Day of Saint Tatyana», when students was allowed to walk until morning, to bawl songs in nightly streets and even without consequences to provoke policemen. He was invited in such holiday as guest, took place in restaurant Frenchman Olivje, and saw, how students make merry, then he decided to use the students, inexhaustible for ideas and fantasy, in his goals.

He invited their in number 20 men, surprised at invitation, offered seats around table, entertained at tea and made the following proposition:

— Who wishes to receive per rouble?

Students made a din: such wish could have everyone! But whatís necessary to do?

— Here is rouble for each! You have to go in taverns and to order food quite enough.

— Is it all job? — students were astonished. They became to make a noise, exchange glances, give winks to each other: whatís strange merchant — he squanders such money!

— No, it would be not all job. After you ordered food, you will require vodka «Table wine № 21», made by Pjotr Arsenitch, about half glass. But donít require more.

Students grasped the meaning, understudy the matter at once and became to bombard with questions:

— But if vodka would absent?

— But if they would not give it?

— If we will be thrown out on necks?

— If they will ask: who is he, this Pjotr Arsenitch? We donít know him!

But Asenitch was waiting these questions. He calmly heard out everyone and explained artful plan:

— If, beyond expectation, there wouldnít be vodka of Arsenitch, you will have to promise, that youíll never come here. Besides you will tell other persons, that you hadnít received «Smirnovskaja» vodka. If head waiter will hesitate and say: there is no required vodka, but it will be tomorrow, please, demand this vodka more insolently. Demand to bring immediately! Make a row to the fullest, as you are able, donít be afraid of nobody, I will settle myself an affair with police!

This proposition from Arsenitch, a careful man, sounded really in a revolutionary way and took the fancy of students. They unanimously rose up and ran away, not to touch to teacups, made, by the way, on porcelain works of Kuznecoff, the most respected in Russia in these years. Arsenitch hadnít other services in his home.

And further — came on! Moscow buzzed. Newspapers wrote reports about scandal in tavern, about another scandal in restaurant! It was happened through any vodka of any Arsenitch, only God knows who he is!

It could be said there, that Arsenitchís vodka and he himself were not widely known in Moscow. Owners of taverns were surprised: the devil take it! What is the evil suggestion?!

And now — the announcement appeared in newspapers about trade of Arsenitchís vodka i.e. about «Table wine № 21», from which hair of tavern-keeper turned grey. Just now they go to purchase vodka for future use. Directors of shops, belonging to Arsenitch, were not being initiated into his guileful plan, couldnít understand, from what was such interest arisen, but Pjotr Arsenjevich was smiling and repeating:

— It will be even greater!

After a time he called the same students: «Boys, here are now per three roubles. Arrive at places near Moscow and do everything in such way, as was ordered firstly!» And already new orders for delivery of new vodka had been sent. Afterwards he donated per ten roubles for students and let them to visit Russian towns and to do the same! It is said, that brothers Shustoff also advertised their cognac in the same manner. Young men, being engaged by them, when came in restaurant, became acquainted with card of drinking and required: «Shustoffís cognac, please!»

In case if wishful drink was absent they made an obstruction for personnel.

Well, Shustoff always to be close on the heels of us.

Of course, these are fine legends. Huge efforts were required to arrange the sale of our articles owing to the fact, that our rivals were watchful, made attempts to take the lead over us by any means.

Therefore the solution was only in put right, laborious actions, aimed for attraction of customers. We did everything for it and Pjotr Arsenjevich-especially. He personally opened our branches in Nizhny Novgorod, at Rozhdestvenskaja street, in the house of A. Shugurova and during functioning of exhibition at Theatre square, in the house of Muratova. He visited Baku, where our branch was opened in the house of brothers Agrieff. The trade of Smirnoffís production in Moscow carried out by the most prestigious shops. Our shop at Pjatnickaja street, number 1 was the most remarkable, some later, after fatherís death, shop at Tverskaja street, placed in fashionable house of Moscow merchant Vargyn was the second by popularity. This house placed in opposite of the house, which was belong to Moscow governor-general. Pjotr Arsenjevich had two another shops, located at Pjatnickaja street, in the house number 2, owned to Mesherina, as well as in the house number 18. At «native» street of Ivan Aleksejevich Smirnoff, named Varvarka street, number 5, owned to Moscow society of merchants, the shop was also opened.

Except branches our shops was also opened in Nizhni Novgorod. Three shops were located at Czarís street, father leased 5 groceries at Shawlís street: two groceries of Jegor Sergejevich Sarkizoff and three — of Anastasija Andrejevna Muratova. Moreover, Pjotr Arsenjevich owned two grocery-stores in the house of Muratova, at Nizhegorodskaja street.

The production was kept in numerous private warehouses. Together with the main central warehouse, placed near Pjatnicky house, there were else 15 another one. One of these warehouses, named «Jershovsky», located opposite of our house, through Moscow river, in Jershovsky alleyway, number 8, in the house of Ruzskaja. Huge warehouses placed at streets Bolshaja Ordinka and Vsehsvjatskaja. Innumerable recourses of Russian wine (from Crimea, Bessarabia, Derbent, Daghestan, Cahetia, Kyzljar etc.) as well as foreign wine, were kept here in fudders. At the warehouse in Sadovniki, in addition to spirit and table wine, the most expensive wine (Madeira wine and sherry) aged there, as well as champagne, produced by Russian and Western firms and fizz of own production.

In Pjotr Arsenjevichís property was large warehouse in Petrovsk, Daghestan, where, depending of season, from 8 to 18 workers were engaged. But shop owned to brothers Jelisejeff was, undoubtedly, the most prestige point of our trade. I met Gregory Jelisejeff in Paris, during emigration.

Arsenitch and restaurant

Arsenitchís vodka was presented in the most elite establishments in Russian Empire.

Let us look into the greatest of it — in Moscow «Jar», which was established by Frenchman with the same strange surname. The wealthy merchants make marry there after successful bargain and vodka flows like water. But here is a final of merrymaking. As witness wrote, «all drunkenness was lost at once» from the view of morning «Jar». What he saw here? Restaurant was appeared sheer destruction: no one drapery, no one safe mirror, even overhead chandelier also laid on floor in flinders and crystal prisms of had been broken under feet of tired servants. Uncle sat on divan and drank kvass; sometimes he remembered anything and jerked by legs…».

But here the bill is presented now. Not by anybody, but by owner of «Jaríípersonally, with kowtow. Itís short bill, on amount «only» 17 thousand rubles, minus «one and half thousand of discount», had been gained before. Moreover — «on servants hands» — was «per five rubles» for each. «Per three rubles» — was for yard-keepers, watchmen, policemen, gendarmes, which were drawing the gests until carriages.

But there were not all expenses. Numerous «detachment» of cabmen was also waiting for money. «…They were an immense quantity of them and everybody also waited for us». In such principle — «whether would be any needs for Your Excellency to send for anything?». Cabmen were accounted «by their heads» and gave per three rubles for each.

Preference of consumers — wealthy merchants was given to Arsenitchís vodka. Merchants started drinking after a dayís work or in cases of signing of advantageous contract.

Merchantís feast — itís not only drinking and snack. This is revelry, when all hell is let loose, unique dishes, not been included neither in menu, nor in owners plans and had been thought out by visitors themselves. Since such «dishes» were paid up generously, owners made it willingly. The names of such «dishes» entered into history of restaurant business in Russia. Here is the list of it:

«Aquarium»: Grand piano had been moved forward in the even middle of restaurantís hall, the cover was opened and a few dozen of bottles with champagne poured out into piano. After that sprats or sardines were thrown «to swim». The orchestra had to play dashing marsh.

«Real Roman swing»: They swung and threw up by hands undressed restaurantís «actress» until she would lose consciousness.

«Funeral of water nymph»: The real coffin (black, terrible) was brought, living «actress» was placed inside, candles had been lighted and Gipsy chorus was obliged to perform funeral dirge. Drunken organizers of funeral got drunk finally and sobbed with real tears.

«Going on the gridiron»: All plates and dishes moved from tables on floor and drunken company walked all along this unsteady «bridge» back and forth. Broken plates (not the most cheap) were generously repaid by rich drunkards so called «money-bags». Orchestra played waltz of Shopen at that time.

«Bathing in champagne»: Bath got carried in restaurant, champagne (or cheap fizz at the price of champagne) poured out and undressed «actress» was thrown inside. There was exact information, that at least one water nymph became too cold and died by reason of pneumonia.

«Exotic»: Huge tray got carried, where «in the middle of flowers, greens and cold garnish» reclined undressed woman. When such «exotic» placed on table, Bacchanalia was stated. This attraction delighted drunkards. They strewed lady over with bank notes, generously poured by wine. Bacchanalia lasted a few hours, but personnel were willingly ready to do anything. As example, «Bacchant» had usual rate «five hundred roubles and as much guests would throw up».

Former merchantís vim remained also in restaurants of USSR epoch. Representatives of criminal societies, seamen of long voyage, workers from gold-mines made merry «in style» there. As a rule only such persons was in funds. In Tbilisi remember the history about drunken «visitor», which made a bet, that head-cook will serve up his own cut finger. Head-cook was called. «What?!», — he was stunned. «But for 5 thousand?». «Never!». They agreed for 20 thousand rubles…

The distance from town Liepaja (Latvia) to Riga is 200 kilometers. In 1970 years sailors, coming back from long voyage, made merry in the local restaurants, then ordered taxi and required to drive them in Riga by reverse motion! They generously paid up to drivers.

What and in what manner drink the «new Russians»? Correspondent of newspaper «Arguments and facts» visited restaurants in Rublevka — the famous place of Moscow. In restaurant «Bazaar» manager offered him cognacs in crystal bottles, enchases with 24-carat gold. Cost of it is from one thousand dollars to several tens thousand dollars.

At sixth kilometre of Rublevsky highway is placed club-casino «Dynasty» at the distance of 10 kilometers to cottage of Putin, at the distance of 20 kilometers to former estate of Jeltcin. Like the reference point. Average prices for food are 30–60 dollars for one dish. Prices for 25 grammes cognac «Louie XII» and «Hennesy Richard» are 200 dollars. Director of shop «Crossroad/Perekrestok» told about order, given at 6 hours in the morning: bottle of cognac for 140 thousand roubles and tin of fizz, seemingly, to drink after cognac.

He also narrated about touching meeting of two friends near shop. They didnít see each other for a long time, so decided to celebrate the meeting just here. The bottle of cognac with price 228 thousand rubles and…plastic «glasses» were purchased by friends for such aim. Director of shop brought out crystal goblets and lemon, had been privately cut. Cognac was drunk just on bonnet of car. Being in club «Family of the nobility» correspondent called for menu and decided to «carouse», as they say, for all cash in hand. 500 rubles he had, was enough only for cup of tea and portion of fruit salad.

In Europe for recognition

1871 year. Status of the first guildís merchant was granted to Arsenitch. He became rich manufacturer, the eliteís member of Moscow business and industry, he also owner of splendid house, as well as of winery, envisaging further development, huge warehouses and trade relations with many of towns in the country. But something disturbs of merchant. He fully appreciates, that business for vodka production does not at a standstill and wine trade is growing, rivals by his own example, stake on qualitative drinks only. Market is market and its means, that it not be possibly for Arsenitch to rest on laurels. He comprehended the following: in order that anybody would not be close on the heels, itís necessary to go forward for a long way. But how?

An idea was born at that time: itís necessary to confirm his superiority in Russia by recognition of European specialists and experts, though itís not so patriotic. What to do, if itís always the same in Russia: — there is nothing better, than to receive anything «imported», «from there». For example, such as a merchandise, praise, recognition. Whatever you like, perhaps, except vodka. Native, home-grown vodka is needed for Russian people. Therefore Arsenitch decided to send hid drinks at International Industrial Exhibition of 1873 at Vienna.

He was excited, was waiting a result: what would say prudish Europe? But «verdict» was unanimous: quality is excellent, drinks are worthy of European attention — i.e. Honorary diploma and medal for exhibitionís participant.

There was the first official recognition, made by professionals. From Viennese debut the triumphal parade of «Smirnoff» vodka, produced by him, was started over world-wide capitals. So his worldís glory was begun.

America will recognize Arsenitchís vodka in 1876. At Universal industrial exhibition in Philadelphia his strong drinks was declared among the betters and noted by medal of highest reward for «the highest quality of production» after prolonged and scrupulous testing, made by international jury.

Success was louder than in Vienna! Henceforth the Great Philadelphiaís medal, as mark of winner, was embellished all labels on ware of Arsenitch. In the final result of exhibition Ministry of Finance in Russia conferred his firm with the high merit, awarding the State emblem, which entitled to place Russian State emblem on labels, as mark of achievements in national industry. This was the mark of guaranteed quality, it discovered new opportunities for business. Emblem had a «high price» — it at once placed Arsenitchís firm on the first position among rivals. Now he became undisputed leader in production of vodka and in wineís trade.

A year later was new victory at International exhibition in Paris! Two gold medals for vodka and for wine were obtained in France, in the country of winemaking! Now three medals and one State emblem embellished the labels for Arsenitchís vodka.

Success in Paris strengthened the leadership of Arsenitch among producers of alcoholic drinks.

In 1882, Arsenitchís firm for the first time during its existence took part at All-Russian industrial-artistic exhibition. Exposition of Arsenitchís factory was not so great, but range of presented liqueurs, kinds of nastoyka and vodka amazed imagination of everybody — as visitors, as experts. However, experts, being in session all week long, paid attention not on external effects, they investigated the taste of Arsenitchís drinks, in order to determine on evidence of laboratory investigations, who from manufacturer takes care of customers health, but who only about own profit.

In the final result of exhibition Ministry of Finance awarded his factory the right for placing of the second State emblem, i.e. the most considerable and long wished award — only the title of Supplier for Imperial Court was above it. The second double eagle opened the way to this Olympus. But it was non simple thing-to receive such title in Russia. Exclusively the best goods had the honor of right to supply the Court of Russian emperors.

In spring of 1885 Arsenitch at second time forwarded a petition to Ministry of Court (the first was declined in 1869 year), which was brief and sincere: Iím asking the permission for delivery of drinks for Court of Russian emperor. Refusal of 1869 was motivated, that firms, belonging to Depre and Rouge, supply drinks, moreover, Arsenitchís drinks were not enough acknowledged for general public. But refusal couldnít be there on this occasion, since vodka and wines of Arsenitch were recognized in Moscow Court Office. So, in 1886, after long circulation of papers among officials, the award of Arsenitch with order of Saint Stanislas of III degree was followed. Long-awaited answer from winter palace, the residence of Russian Imperial home was received immediately after: Czar Alexander III desired himself that the drinks of Arsenitch would be delivered for his Court. There was the moment of highest happiness for Arsenitch, he came to this great aim during many years. He came to it, prevailing rivals, receiving applause and medals. But he hadnít the main prize, the higher recognition, he could only dream formerly, in youth about it. Soon the third State emblem was followed, as confirmation of high title of Supplier for Czar.

The relations between Arsenitch and Ministry of Imperial Court were developed successfully: his drinks were excellent. Grandees constantly noted the growing quality of his vodka, liqueur, vodka, nastoyka and wine. In 1888 Arsenitch, already being treated sufficiently kindly by fortune and by authority, by named order of Imperial decree «with autograph, made by His Majesty» was granted with title of Commercial Adviser, actually civil general of Russian empire.
